/usr/doc/lilo-0.21/README says:

   LIL-   The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by
a
    geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/map without running the map
    installer.

 Alas, I've no idea what that means :)

 See if you can boot off CD, mount the root partition under /broken, and
re-run lilo like so:

 lilo -R /broken

 You didn't overwrite the /boot/map file with System.map or anything,
did you ?

'fraid to say I did!   Stupid yes!  I wasn't paying attention at the time. 
I'm booting off a floppy anytway but its just the RH install floppy.
