It's worth pointing out that the file System.map is 
_completely_ different and separate from /boot/map.

System.map is a list of symbols for addresses in the
kernel.  /boot/map is a LILO data file that contains 
the actual location of the kernel on the disk (in
low-level coordinates, so that LILO can load it withou
any filesystem support at boot time.)
