It turns out that the threads architecture for pthreads and WINE is
incompatible. There is work in WINE at the moment to make other
applications use Wine threads as opposed to pthreads but it's very rough
and ready at the moment and probably not a good idea. So until further
notice (aka forever), they have to be kept apart
