I have heard ( and believe ) that replying to such mail means that
the spammer knows that your email address is "alive". I prefer to
look at the email ( even looking at the headers ), to see which 
free email services are being used. Almost all free email services
have a usage policy which dictates that the accounts cannot be used
for spam. Therefore forwarding the spam to the address 
abuse at whatever email service can help to shutdown the spammers 
quickly ( e.g. abuse at yahoo.com ).

There are also organisations which are trying to put anti-spamming
systems in place ( sorry I cannot think of the names at the moment ).
