I know no good books sorry but I think your problems sound client-side,
and I'm not sure if it is IMAP specific...

I've noticed with pine for example that if I open my sent-mail from my
main machine, the to line is shown in the list, and if I open it from
another one my name is shown (i.e. the From field), adding addresses to
alt-addresses in pine makes it always show the to address if the
alt-address is in the from address ...

Hopefully that is not too confusing :-), it happens whether IMAP is used
or not ..
