[ILUG] Free web mail front ends?

Does anyone know of existing (free) software that would allow an 
Apache server to provide html access to mail accounts (like 
hotmail etc do) ?  A quick search around has come up with 
nothing, but maybe I missed something...?

If there's nothing out there I'm considering a student project to 
create one.
