Check this out. I was searching the US patents db for VA Linux, as they
refer to a patent held by them in their prospectus, and wound up searching
for "linux", which returns lots of patents that reference Linux
(unsurprisingly).
One in particular caught my eye -- check out (a) who's applying, (b) what
they're applying for, and (c) the "Other References" section, fifth entry!

There are some *shocking* patents in there. Not quite as bad as the 3d Pie
Charts patent issued a couple of years ago, but pretty bad,
