if you are connecting both NIC's together without going through a hub, etc, 
you NEED a cross-over cable. I was in the same boat as you, connecting up a 
Linux Laptop and a Windoze '95 PC and couldn't get a sound out of either 
until I used the crossover cable. Now everything is fine...Well, that's not 
quite true - the windows pc has a Linux partition and I can contact that 
without any difficulty, but I can't contact the Windows partition. Then 
again, I'm not too worried about that...:)
