Easiest way, PLIP, it's in the FAQ's ...
other than that, floppy or Zip Drives work, 

Install the base system from floppies (debian or slakware are v.good for
that) after that set up a PLIP / SLIP link over a laplink cable and work
from there.

An easier way still (and faster in the medium term) might be to obtain a
PCMCIA NIC, you can get them fairly cheap now (I got a Xircom 10/100 for £20
recently !!) Once you get one of those it'll soar ... 

Another way (screwdrivers at the ready for this) is to buy a 2.5" -> 3.5"
IDE adaptor cable and install using a desktop machine onto the laptops
hard-drive, then transfer the HD back to the laptop, you'll need a bootdisk
to get in first time to adjust the necessary config files (fstab and lilo
AFAIR). and away you go. ...

Not all that easy, but doable all the same :o)
