Mark,
Do a ps -aux | grep pine and kill all the processes listed.
Alternatively go to /var/spool/mail/ and try to unlink and remove the lock
file named after your username.

Everything working fine until this evening with Pine.
All of a sudden I'm getting message that 'inbox - read only'
this suggests
another open mail reader or other pine app running but I've
closed
everything to no avail.
Any suggestions?
