[ILUG] personal lib copies

[ILUG] personal lib copies

for the new college year they've set things up fairly nicely here; SuSE 6.2
with a decent NFS/NIS setup. could be a lot worse.

anyway, i want to build enlightenment from tarballs, which means i'm going
to have to build the libraries (libjpeg, png, tiff and friends, imlib) as well
and put them in my home directory. i don't have root, and i want to be able
to use this from any linux lab machine (there are 200). so, in a nutshell,
how do i make sure these are looked for before the system-wide libs by ld or
whatever? i'm hoping i just have to stick a path into some shell variable.

actually a little bit of an explanation about how this (library
loading/linking) works would be *really* nice, but i don't want to push my
luck. it's probably relatively simple though.

coding in java all the time does nothing for your knowledge of unix/libc.

TIA..
