I have a suggestion:
Maybe the bootdisk is set to root=<wrong partition>?
If it expects root to be /dev/hda3, but you have /dev/hda2,
then just get to the lilo prompt, then type
'linux root=/dev/hda2 1'. Gives you single user mode, from
which you can do maintenance work. Type 'lilo -v' and read
the results carefully.
