Only thing is that SW is libc5, all my other systems are glibc2.1

Great suggestion though, 

Is there an easy way to say, 

if networked mount /all_the_good_stuff_from_the_server
else ...

and use XDM on login only when networked ??

I want X remotly if I'm connected to headless1
