There was mention earlier of setting up some sort of lessons / tutorials for
users, here's an ideal candidate !!

Hi! Proinnsias,
I live in Howth and got your e-mail address from the ILUG. I have only being
using a computer for the past two years. I have done all the usual stuff
with Windows95 like setting up web-pages, creating screensavers, learning
Qbasic and a little Visual Basic etc.
I recently purchased a copy of Red Hat Linux and after a lot of reading, I
eventually managed to partition my hard drive so that I now have Windows95
on a 2Gb. partition and  a Linux Workstation on a 2.2Gb. partition. My
problem now is to learn to use it for home use!
I have my CD player set up and I have installed a lot of photos in my
/home/user directory and can use the text editors, but seem to be stuck at
that.
I downloaded some themes this week using Windows. (My modem is a winmodem so
I will have to buy an external modem to use with Linux.) I downloaded them
to floppys and and then copied them to my /home/users directory but have no
idea how to install them or what directory they should be installed in. I
also got an extra CD with Red Hat which has a lot of extras on it. All I can
do yet is read what is on the CD and copy some of the applications into my
/home/users directory ( I seem to put everything in there!) but have no idea
how to install or run them. I would like to learn.
There is nobody here in Howth who has a clue about Linux. I asked two
systems developers who I know, if they could help with some info. I got the
stock answer; "what do you want to learn that for?". Not very helpful.
I searched the web and looked up night classes in Dublin but no joy. The
only classes that I could find were commercial ones which cost about £1,500
and are not geared for beginners or home users anyway.
I was also told that someone my age, ( I am 56.) would be too old to learn
anyway! I was also told the same thing about touch typing and proved the
begrudgers wrong. I can now type at 30 words per minute. I aim to prove them
wrong again!
The reason that I have contacted you is that I see that you live on the
North Side and I was wondering if you know of any classes that I could avail
of or even if you know, if there is a tutorial available on CD that would
enable me to learn the basics. As I say, I only want it for home use. I am
just interested in learning as much as I can, as a hobby, but none of the
users groups seem to be geared for people like me.
I would be very gratefull if you could give me any info. at all.
