have a look at /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound
also, run sndconfig as root (it's in one of the sbin dirs, either
/usr/sbin/ or /sbin/ to configure the sound card)

PS. I don't agree with you about Gnome/E .. KDE is a bit more
stable/mature, but then again my prefered environment is Window Maker
and about a dozen RXVTs on different desktops..
