Using netstat to see what ports ntpd is listening on.
Then use telnet to see if you can connect to the port.

By the way whats the advantage of using a GPS receiver
as oppossed to the time server in trinity college ?
You could dialup every 3 hours or whatever and sychronise
with it? A lot cheaper I'd say? How much wsa the GPS thingy?
