[ILUG] magic, file, freefile

I am looking for a replacement for /bin/file on Solaris.
 Basically, there are two alternatives:

 - file-3.27 (1), originally by Ian Darwin. This version is apparently
used by all major Linux and *BSD distributions

 - freefile-1.5 (2), clone of (1). Rewritten by Adam Richter from scratch
to resolve the copyright issue with (1)

Can anyone make a recommendation which of them to use? Does
either one recognise more different file types than the other?

This may seem unimportant, but the command is to be used by
AMaViS - the virus scanner plug-in for sendmail and other MTA's.
I just need the most powerful tool available for the job.
