[ILUG] XFS and unix sockets

[ILUG] XFS and unix sockets

Today, I applied a bunch of Red Hat 5.2 updates and it broke
X. Previously, I was running the font server on TCP port 7100
and XF86Config told the X server to find it with a FontPath
entry of "tcp/localhost:7100".

However, the updated xfs RPM launched the font server with
the following command:

   xfs -droppriv -daemon -port -1

Note the "-port -1". This means use a UNIX domain socket
in /tmp/.font-unix/. However, the X server wasn't configured
to look for this socket.

I fixed the problem by removing the "-port -1" option and
letting it default to port 7100.

What I'd like to know is how you tell the X server to connect
to the font server via a UNIX domain socket. And does anyone
know if this is likely to be faster than a local TCP connection?

Later,
Kenn
