Thanks a million . I was really starting to think I was doing something
stupid . It seems very stupid that something like telnet doesn't install as
default . It's working fine now anyway .

You don't have the telnet package installed. Go to your installation
CD and find the RPM for telnet, or use your distribution's package
manager (whatever that is)
