There is a way to get it to boot in single-user mode when starting up, but
i'm not sure how other than typeing init 1 from a user prompt so i will
tell you how to download and make a boot disk(it's a slackware
installation boot disk but it will allow you to actually get to your linux
partition and try and fix the problem, it won't try to install slackware
unless you type setup).
First download the following files:
metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/slackware/bootdsks.144/bare.i
metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/slackware/bootdsks.144/RAWRITE.EXE
metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/slackware/rootdsks/color.gz
Once that is done you will need 2 floppy disks(3 1/2 inch floppies) label
one rootdisk and the other bootdisk, you will need to be in msdos mode to
do this, it will not work properly under windows, enter the directory
where you put the 3 above files and type:
rawrite
When it asks for the filename, enter bare.i and then it will ask you for
the drive, either a: or b:, after it is finished with the bootdisk, insert
the rootdisk and run rawrite again using color.gz.
Once the floppies are made insert the bootdisk and boot from it, it will
later ask your for a rootdisk, insert your rootdisk at that time, once it
gives you a login prompt, login as root with no password. You will now
have to mount your linux partition to a directory, first type:
mkdir /root
And then type:
mount /dev/(device for your linux partition) /root
If you do not know what the device is, you'll have to figure it out.
once you mount the drive goto the dir /root/etc/rc.d and you'll find the
scripts linux uses to startup, i would need more information to help you
further.
