[ILUG] Overriding a function

I'm trying to override a function in WINE which is declared as static.
Instead of that function being called, I want my own to be called but I
can't see how to do it without hacking WINE. I tried the LD_PRELOAD
approach and tried to change the function pointer directly - neither
worked. Any ideas how it might be done?
