It's a little known fact but the Nokia 7110 actually uses a smaller version
  of the Digital VAX series.

indeed. AFAIK it uses the uVAX CPU (microVAX) which was a version of
the VAX targetted at the embedded market. (Also used in Compaq's Itsy
credit-card size research computer).

While it's stuck in about the same spot as the
regular Linux VAX port, it offers great possibilities in moving things
along quicker since it actually has a two digit bogomips.

It boots via the infrared port which actually sends out bootp requests
on phone startup. Apparently the 7110 doesn't support doing this via
GSM yet but it might happen in a future model.

yeah, this was mentioned on BugTraq a while back. Some people were
worried about hackers 'capturing' peoples phones by discreetly
bootstrapping a trojan horse OS. I believe later versions of the
Nokia firmware have a modified BOOTP protocol - they implemented
kerberos authentification via the BOOTP vendor extensions.

very nifty.

The hard part is the keyboard driver. In addition to the challenges
presented by a 10 key keyboard, the sliding handset actually powers
off and on the keyboard. For folks grepping for curse words the
drivers/loof/lirpa.c file make for amazing reading.

Anyway, just thought i'd pass the info along...
