An old question perhaps, but I feel reluctant to waste 60 quid if I can
avoid it.
Here's the scenario:
1. I have a swedish(?) USR Sportster X2 modem, that I can't get to work on
the Irish phone system for some reason or other (I hear some sort of rapid,
beeping, error tone when it tries to open the line). Anyone had a similar
experience (the same cable is okay with the internal modem)?
2. I also have a crappy Conexant/Rockwell V.90 Gateway OEM ("Whitehorse")
winmodem (dont remember the chipset but it used to be listed as WM on the
big list). I have pretty much given up on this, since Rockwell/Conexant
can't even be bothered to answer my emailqueries on driver support for
GNU-Linux.
So to the point. I saw Dixons, Dublin is having a discount on the Diamond
Supra External at 59 iep. Now my problem is that I can't find any
information regarding this modem, and it's capabilities with Gnu-linux. I
would assume it would be okay since it's external, but people tell med there
are now also external Winmodems? Anyhow, what's your bets on this any help
or ideas would be most welcome. Feel free to take this off the list, since I
am sure everybody is tired of these type discussions by now. (Final note,
maybe it would be an idea to spring an extra 20 for a 3Com external?). Final
final note: I am on Mandrake 7, and RedHat 6.1 at the moment.
Regards
Hans Petersson
