[ilug] gcc question

hello all,
i've installed mandrake 7.0 and gcc compiler.
i can see that all the header files have been installed, 
but when i try to compile anything it tells me that it can't
find the files.
i tried to add the path into the PATH= section in the .bashrc
but it then gives me and error about the specific files.

any ideas?
