[ILUG] I Just can't ping my windoze Box - help :-(

No mater what I try I just can't ping my windoze box from my mandrake 7
distro,
I've got a 3Com 509b TPO on a hub and it all works when I boot the same box
up in windoze, I've reinstalled mandrake 7 a few times as I've noticed the
installation isn't always as successful I it should be. I've installed
Mandrake using the recommended setup because every time I try Custom setup
Xwindows comes up as a blank screen - damned if I know why cos I install
everything.
Any way I have added the 3c509 Kernel module in linuxconf, and that gets the
light on the hub lighting, success you might think but still no ping ! I
have disabled PnP OS in the Bios and I even tried disabling the PnP on the
card itself but that screwed windoze up totally - and Linux didn't improve.
I've even tried setting up samba any way but to no avail - no suprise there
seeing as the boxes won't ping. the other box has a genius GE2000 III and
although there suposed to be a crap NIC it does work ( that particular box
is a windoze box ).
I'm out of Ideas so if any one has been through this ordeal with the
mandrake 7 distro and can help I'd be very greatful.
