Sony Vaio - various incarnations, all benefit from magnesium casing (==super light), li-on batteries, screen quality to die for. Beware though, 'accessories' for this puppy are expensive, with a capital $ :)
Number two slot goes to IBM thinkpads - great build quality, great reliability, though if memory serves me right, some models have non-standard RAM and hence upgrading can be expensive.
On a general note, if you know anyone stateside, you can pick up one through the auction sites cheaply - though make sure you buy one from a manufacturer who honours international warranties.

+Subject: [ILUG] New notebook

+I know this is regularly asked, but the answer obviously
+changes just as
+regularly as the market moves. I need to buy a notebook
+shortly (this week
+!) and Im looking for recommendations. Obviously it has to have Xfree
+support for the video chipset. I also want to get something
+with more than
+a 1 year warranty, due to previous horror stories with getting
+an out of
+warranty notebook repaired. I dont necessarily need the fastest thing
+going a 300/400 MHz box will be fine for me. Is this is such
+a FAQ maybe
+we should have a special section on the web site as people buy new
+notebooks they could report on how they are with Linux, and on how the
+notebook actually feels, having had it for a while.
