]the PC was getting 180K. Slow as anything and incompatible with everything,

It still has the ability to use it, for obvious reasons. Normally, Floppies
are used at a single speed, just like the PC. It can still do that trick
for HD Floppies, but preference these days says not to, thus 1.4Mb floppies.
If you have an old DD diskette that used this method, it will still be read
using that method.
BTW: does anyone have a Powerbook Floppy drive that they no longer want? My
sisters is damaged.
