If you don't have Partition Magic 5.0 (which would make all of this rather painless for you) you might want to have a look at http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part
You'll find a decent freeware partition manager there, as well as a boot manager (but I'd stay with LILO)...and I believe the source code is there if you're inclined to play with it, but it's a separate file.
