[ILUG] Linux Summer Course for Secondary Students

[ILUG] Linux Summer Course for Secondary Students

Hi,

I'm in the process of applying to Athlone Institute of Technolgy
("the college") for permission to run a Summer Course on Linux
("the course") for Secondary Students from local schools.

The course will focus on Web Development and programming
(using HTML and possibly Python) and use this as the framework
for an introduction to Linux. Because it is a Summer Course,
and because the students are that bit younger, I wanted to
have Web development as the theme to make the course sound
appealing, as opposed to having a course on Linux itself
which might appear to be (and actually be) overly technical.

I am writing a blurb about the course, something along the lines
of the following (see below). The target audience of this blurb
would be
a) college authorities, b) school principals and IT teachers
and c) students;
who would not necessarily be expected to be familiar with Linux.

******************************************************
Course Title: Web Development and Programming on Linux

Details:
The course will focus on developing Web pages for the Internet
using the Linux operating system. Students will learn not
only how to create Web pages, but also understand how such
Web pages are made available on the internet. Students will
also be introduced to programming techniques for advanced
Web development.

Course Specifics:
What is Linux? Linux is a free operating system, which comes
with a wide variety of free, professional quality software.
It is particularly suitable for schools (and commercial
companies) as an alternative to Microsoft operating systems
such as Windows 98 or Windows NT. Not only is the price of the
operating system a major advantage, it also supports a growing
range of free software to support mainstream educational curricula.

What software will be used? HTML will be introduced as the
"language" of the Web; students will also learn the Python
programming language to allow for more advanced Web development.

Who is this course for? This course is aimed at 5th year students
who have previous experience with computers, are interested in
Web development, and who are perhaps considering a career
in computers.

Please Note - This is course is not suitable for beginners.

Time and Place? It is intended that the course will be held for
6-8 hours per week, for the 4 weeks of July.
*****************************************************************

Anyone have any comments regarding either the course content
or the phrasing of the blurb? or the choice of software?
(or the choice of operating system??)

Any comments welcomed. I'll be sending this in tomorrow
or the day after (obviously after tidying it up a bit
first).

Regards,
Cormac.
