[ILUG] When is the newest kernel major version out ?

Any idea when the latest kernel (2.4.0 ?) is due out ?

I have been waiting to install my laptop for ages since I heard that the
latest version would have PCMCIA support and a few other cool things
built in.

I assumed that at the rate that new distributions were being released
last year that the new kernel would be along soon, but apparently not.
