It sure sound like a cabling problem ... the correct cabling is as
1 -> 1 Usually white/orange -> white/orange
2 -> 6 Usually orange -> green
3 -> 3 Usually white/green -> white/green
4 -> 4 Usually blue -> blue
5 -> 5 Usually white/blue -> white/blue
6 -> 2 Usually green -> orange
7 -> 7 Usually white/brown -> white/brown
8 -> 8 Usually brown -> brown
note: The cable is only using 1, 2, 3 and 6 so the others are irrelevant
