man stat.
Basically it returns a "stat structure"
         off_t     st_size;              /* file size, in bytes */
That's the line I think you're looking for.

This piece of code compiles on FreeBSD and should compile on Linux.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/stat.h>

int main(void)
{
        struct stat statbuf;
        if (stat("test", &statbuf) < 0)
                fprintf(stderr,"stat error for test");
        else {
                printf("%d\n\n",statbuf.st_size);
        }
}

Hope this helps,
Phil.
