PCI sound cards go for less than half that. You should be outraged that
a mere SCSI card should cost so much.
Adaptec effectively have a monopoly on the market. Quite how they
managed this I'm not sure - they've always been very expensive for no
tangible gain. NCR/SymBIOS chips were always every bit as capable,
reliable, and way cheaper. Either NCR/SymBIOS didn't push hard enough or
Adaptec won in marketing deals. BTW, Adaptec tried to buy out the
SymBIOS SCSI business but it was blocked - it would have turned a mere
monopoly into an absolute dictatorship with something over 90% of the
market.
