I should have pointed out that the problem has been solved -
Padraig Finnerty recommended I trying booting linux with
"no-hlt", which worked like a charm. I still have to figger out
how to get lilo to do that *every* time,
append="no-hlt"
but I won't be shutting down/rebooting very often so it's not a
major concern. Of course, it's not a permanent fix, but it'll do
until I rebuild the box.
try moving the sound card as far away from the cpu/video/chipset as
possible if you can.
