 I have no idea which part of your sw requires gd, but one possible
 problem is that gd hasn't generated gif (only png) since release 1.6.
 Also, I think gd 1.8 added support for jpeg and xpm; without seeing
 any compile or error logs I'd suggest to investigate into this direction.
