go hunt down an ancient linux distribution like sls or slackware.  2.2.x
is pretty much out of the question since i remember a 2.1.late discussion
about linux being trimmed down to 2.5meg.

minix might be another option to consider.  i've run it on a 640k 286(ish)
and it did quite well.
