Ah - thanks for the explanation, I only knew that behavious from (E)IDE
drives so far. What still strikes me as a bit odd, though: Why did it take
several mke2fs to make the badblocks go away?

Well, yeah, you're probably right. It's just such a shame to see 5.5GB SCSI
go down the drain... ...especially, when one's strapped for space... :-}
