Nice one. It was actually the xserverrc file (as I don't run xdm/gdm).
Anyone know how to work out what's causing these errors:

... when I start a shell ? I've a feeling that it's running out of
filehandles, though file-max is set to 16000, and the nofile in
/etc/security/limits.conf is 2048 (soft) and 4096 (hard).
