you don't have PAM setup correctly for xscreensaver (eg
/etc/pam.d/xscreensaver). what distribution are you using? On a recent
distro with a pwdb that groks NIS the following should be enough:
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
if that doesn't work, you need a newer pwdb.
