[ILUG] Linux community insulted by Intel with P4

No Intel did not tell anyone about the change, have a look in the Kernal
release notes, and you will see the comments from the Kernal Developers.
They have branded the CPU as 686 as a slap in the face to Intel.

I was under the impression that it was the distribution vendors that didn't
bother updating their CPUID databases. Nothing to do with intel.
