[ILUG] Sound cards again (YMF 754)

[ILUG] Sound cards again (YMF 754)

Howdy,
everything else in my mini-VAIO is behaving properly now, but sound
is borken :(

The kernel YMFPCI drivers are hopeless, and either crash the machine or
cause it to emit a loud sound harmful to most human beings, and it's
probably a signal to aliens or something...

The ALSA drivers work, but only in certain cases:
If I load them under 2.2.18 from a cold boot, I get:
kmalloc: Size (2434687236) too large
snd: Yamaha DS-XG PCI soundcard not found or device busy

The Size changes depending on BIOS settings...

If I load them under 2.4.0-test12, I get a message about a kernel BUG in
slab.c (which I'm going to ignore until I know what's going on with 2.2.18).

However, if I boot Windows ME, let it initialise the sound card, and reboot
softly into 2.2.18, it works (most of the time, sometimes it gives me an
annoying sound).

(this is with ALSA 0.5.10, with ALSA 0.60 pre1 (CVS) depmod hangs while
trying to enumerate the ALSA drivers)...

ring any bells with anyone, or anyone got any bright suggestions?
(I've tried with PnP on and off in the BIOS, with the same results)
