OK, not evil but slightly irritating quirk of RH6.2 chpasswd:
it only makes DES encrypted password strings. If you want MD5 
you'll need to use passwd (or summat else that does MD5).
The passwd on my RH6.2 box has a --stdin option, so you could feed
passwords in via a pipe.
