I have had problems in the past installing Mandrake ( and others )
that have UDMA support turned on in the installation kernel. The
7.2 install floppy images now have an append="ide0=autotune"
kernel option, so you may be able to work around a UDMA
problem by modifying this. The symptoms were similar to yours :
all went smoothly until the install started to copy lots of files - it
always hung when it got the the bigger RPMs ( e.g. glibc ).
Having said that, the SMP/Memory suggestion is
probably a better bet.
