I found that this was due to a problem with xemacs seeing scaled fonts, versus
bitmap fonts. (I'm using xemacs 21.1 patch 7.)
Putting
(setq-default font-menu-ignore-scaled-fonts nil) ;t)
in my .xemacs-options (or via the Options tree of choices, but I forget which
one directly modifies this) appears to solve it. I also added
(setq-default font-menu-this-frame-only-p t)
for sanity's sake, tho you may choose differently.
