 Is named already running?

 I am not familiar with SuSE, but on those systems I can check right
 now, named only starts of the config file is found, eg.

if [ -f /usr/sbin/in.named -a -f /etc/named.conf ]; then
        echo 'starting internet domain name server.'
        /usr/sbin/in.named &
fi
