I had the same problem telnetting into a DEC Alpha. I get around it by
creating a file called .telnetrc in ~ containing the following:
alf2.tcd.ie
environ define TERM vt220
----------
This saves me typing the "environ" line every time i start telnet with the intention of logging in to alf2. Groovy. man telnet explains all this I think.
