This has happened to me on a number of occasions - but in my case its a
netscape problem, not X. I've "caught" netscape going nuts once or twice - I
leave my computer with nothing significant other than netscape running and
return to find the disk thrashing like mad. If left to its own devices it
eventually brings X down after a few nonsensical netscape error message
windows appear. I don't have a solution though :( but it happens rarely enough
not to be a major problem for me.
