That's a load of crap.  IIRC, IDE drives silently remap bad sectors
until the situation gets so bad that it either runs out of spares
or finds a sector that it can't read from in order to recover the
data.

The drive is failing.  This should be covered by the drive manufacturers
warranty, so the OEM should have no hesitations in replacing it.

And feel free to name the company.  I went through this with
Gateway a few years ago, and the experience was so bad that I
will never buy from them again.
