The main thing is the age of the drive. It is not unusual to see three
year + drive floating around especially in the desktop end of the
market. Developing bad sectors two months into usage is not good. One of
the ways that the low end of the market shave costs is to remove the
case fan and rely only on the power supply fan to cool the entire case.
Some of the newer UDMA drives run fairly warm and a secondary case fan
is a good thing. It may be a good thing to demand a new drive if the
problem gets worse.
