 Check out the docs for nslookup. Look at the debug, norecurse,
 and nosearch options.

 If you can lay your hands on a copy of DNS & BIND 3rd ed:
 Chapter 11 nslookup, Querying like a BIND name server.

 traceroute has nothing to do with it. It traces the routes that
 IP packets take to another Internet host.
